Another Fish Advisory Lifted - 2003 Update

(WASHINGTON) - Continuing a trend that began in the early 90s, another fish advisory downstream of a bleached chemical pulp and paper mill has been lifted in the U.S. In January, Tennessee environmental authorities removed a fish consumption advisory for dioxin along a 30-mile stretch of the Pigeon River.

This lifting and the steady decline over the last ten years is credited to the virtual elimination of dioxin discharges resulting from elimination of chlorine in favor of chlorine dioxide in the first stage of chemical pulp bleaching - so called Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECF). This latest removal of a fish consumption advisory, brings the total to 25, representing a more than 80 percent decline in the total number of these advisories in place downstream of bleached chemical pulp and paper mills in place at the end of 1990.
